Melanie Wasko was our photographer, and she did an incredible job! Please go here to see all the pics from our "Wedding Story" and the Photo Booth!

I think you maybe have to create an account to log in to see them all, but Melanie will be the only person who gets your email address, and she will only use it once, to let you know when she offers a sale on prints you can order from the site! I promise it's worth the extra effort! (Don't order prints until the sale comes!)
They were printed by Panorama Press, who was a dream to work with! (I made the Save-the-Dates myself, with a picture taken on my iPhone by Sonrisa and some of our photobooth photo collection. They were printed for super cheap by Vistaprint.)

We bought the beautiful, perfect, vintage tandem Schwinn off eBay from a lovely family in Connecticut, who bought in 1963 and took amazing care of it all these years.

We made all the bunting (those triangle-shaped banner things) and table runners (the big pieces of fabric on the tables) ourselves using old sheets and some new fabric. We collected the jars and bottles and vases for the centerpieces over many months, with invaluable help from our friends and family, especially our moms, Phyllis Erwin and Helen Wasko! We bought the flowers online from fiftyflowers.com.

The cake toppers were from Etsy, and although they weren't meant to be cake toppers, they were adorable! Aqua owls!

Our amazing caterers were Diverse Caterers, and while we wish we got leftovers, we have to admit they did an incredible job, making a wide variety of fish-based, vegetarian, vegan, and/or gluten-free foods from several continents. Everything we got to try was delicious and the waitstaff was super helpful.

Our incredibly delicious cupcakes were made by Dana Boyer at Baby Cakes. I want a lifetime supply of those things!

We also need to thank Jim Erwin for his expert choice of wines! You guests didn't drink enough of it, maybe because it was so hot that day, but that just means we have a long-lasting supply!

More thank-yous:
Kate and Patrick for helping with the ring ceremony, and being some of our bestest friends!
Yonah for reading the poem, without crying, even!
Craig and Molly for music and tech help, and carrying a lot of things around for us!
Stef Wasko for applying my false eyelashes!
Zoe and Arun for getting the gluten-free cupcakes!
Garry and Karen for getting bottled water for the hot and thirsty masses!
Our caterer Ken's daughter Madison, for working the under-utilized kid's buffet!
Melanie Melanie Melanie!
You all for being there! <3 <3 <3

My dress was an off-the-rack Betsey Johnson "Tea Party" (hee hee) dress from the King of Prussia mall, altered with silk from B. Wilk Fabrics by Eugene's Tailor Shop. I also wore the petticoat from my mother's wedding dress, which was expertly altered to the correct length by my good friend Sonrisa Rodriguez-Harrison, who also sewed together the backdrop for the Photobooth!

My shoes were from a company called Butter and I got them somewhere online. (They cost more than the dress!)

My bracelet was a gift from my Grandma Wasko several years ago. She told me her uncle bought it for her in Italy when she was a little girl, and it was the first gift she remembered getting! My pearl necklace was a gift from my mother, who has had it forever. My earrings were custom made for me by Emily of Vix Emporium, and her jewelry can be purchased here. My dad, Richard Wasko, made my bouquet! It was beautiful!

I got my hair done at Salon Blush in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philly. I made the headpiece myself with a vintage rhinestone shoe clip, misc. fabrics, and cruelty-free peacock feathers from eBay. I learned to do my makeup at Sephora, from a very nice lady named Michelle.

Mike's suit was custom made by Henry Davidsen Tailors. He wore the same dress shoes he always wears! Our rings were custom made from gold and diamonds from my Grandma Wasko's engagement ring at Bario-Neal, a great jewelry shop in Philadelphia.

---
Welcome family! all those who have come before and already departed, all those yet to
arrive.

So I’ve been doing a little research, collecting stories in preparation for this big event,
and people like you guys. They love you as individuals, they really love you together.
This is not a wedding your clan had to drag themselves to.

We love you because make us laugh, and because you make us proud.

You are, by all accounts, according to people who’ve known you since you, Sharon, were blond, and before you, Mike, ever met that purple sweatshirt, are the happiest you’ve ever been. You exude the most “sense of belonging” in your life.

Nobody gets thought of more when those cute kitten or panda videos come up on facebook, you are both on the short list of who to call when the puppy or feline has an emergency.

Nobody wants you to move far away, we want your babies in the world, we want to squeeze them.

We admire the way you challenge each other and your community.

Have we told you yet we’re proud?

And you make us want to say corny things, like you’re meant to be together.

You are our co-conspirators for deviant operations, as well as the people we count on in crisis.

And while Sharon plays a larger role in the fashion advice dept., and Mike handles the heavy metal inquiries, you both inspire us to invite you to homes, to our parties, to our important rituals coast to coast.

You are deeply trusted, as political allies and community leaders, but also intimate friends.

Your presence in our lives brings us to our own awareness of the powerful, revolutionary forces of love, all kinds of love, including romantic love between people of all genders, including self love, and deep bonds of human (and animal) kinship that necessitates a struggle for justice.

To quote Martin Luther King Jr:
"When I speak of love I am not speaking of some sentimental and weak response. I
am not speaking of that force which is just emotional bosh. I am speaking of that force
which all of the great religions have seen as the supreme unifying principle of life. Love
is somehow the key that unlocks the door which leads to ultimate reality." Beyond
Vietnam, 1967

So today, as we celebrate and sanctify, as we focus on Sharon and Mike’s unity, we remember why they are not off doing this alone at the Track n’ Turf.

― Wendell Berry, wrote in his essay “Sex, Economy, Freedom, and Community”
“Lovers must not, like usurers, live for themselves alone. They must finally turn from
their gaze at one another back toward the community. If they had only themselves to
consider, lovers would not need to marry, but they must think of others and of other
things. They say their vows to the community as much as to one another, and the
community gathers around them to hear and to wish them well, on their behalf and
its own. It gathers around them because it understands how necessary, how joyful,
and how fearful this joining is. These lovers, pledging themselves to one another "until
death," are giving themselves away, and they are joined by this as no law or contract
could join them. And so here, at the very heart of community life, we find not something
to sell as in the public market but this momentous giving. If the community cannot
protect this giving, it can protect nothing...”

Mike and Sharon, we need you. And you need us.

To mark this reciprocal sharing of love, the private and the public love, Sharon and Mike have chosen to engage us all in a ring warming ceremony. The concept is simple: their wedding rings will be passed through everyone’s hands, warming them, literally with our touch, but also with our blessings for their future. When they arrive back to Sharon and Mike, they will be priceless, containing our love, our pledges of support.

These rings are forged of Sharon’s paternal grandmother’s ring, passed down through Richard Wasko. Carolyn Wasko is dearly missed on this day, she was so excited for it.

Sharon and Mike’s dear friends Kate and Patrick will begin this process and help guide us through it.

(Begin Ring Passing)

While the rings are traveling through your hands, Yonah EtShalom, a long time friend of Sharon & Mike, will read “Modern Declaration”, by Edna St Vincent Millay, in celebration of romantic love.

Modern Declaration

by Edna St. Vincent Millay

I, having loved ever since I was a child a few things, never
having wavered
In these affections; never through shyness in the houses of the
rich or in the presence of clergymen having denied these
loves;
Never when worked upon by cynics like chiropractors having
grunted or clicked a vertebra to the discredit of these
loves;
Never when anxious to land a job having diminished them by
a conniving smile; or when befuddled by drink
Jeered at them through heartache or lazily fondled the fingers
of their alert enemies; declare

That I shall love you always.
No matter what party is in power;
No matter what temporarily expedient combination of allied
interest wins the war;
Shall love you always.

Joshua Marcus will serenade us with “Who Knows Where the Time Goes” by Sandy Denny, and if the time goes far and fast, he’ll sing another for us.

(Rings appear via dog.)

The vows you’ll be hearing from Mike and Sharon today are snippets from a magical commitment ceremony that they performed in a cave next to a water fall, where they had a little more privacy than they have today.

But to briefly retell the story around that ceremony, they traveled to upstate NY (Edit: Actually it was Northeast PA) in preparation of today, to have this thing, this moment, this life changing, and the exhange of vows itself was idyllyic. But then they got lost 3 miles down the side of a steep and craggy mountain as it was getting dark. They were with their scared and not so sure footed dogs Maxx & Drusilla, tired and whimpering. Then, torrential rain, the stuff you can’t see through, and panic set in. Crisis, as they got soaked and deeply scared.

And what do you do in crisis? How do you act? Do you turn to blame the ones you’re in it with? Or do you negotiate your way out together?

After a brief foree into freaking out, Mike and Sharon coaxed each other out of that panic. They negotiated together, eventually made their way to the road, eventually a car passed, and the evening ended in a hot bath by a warm fire.

So they take these vows in front of us today after already discovering a bit of the magic, cand the dirty wet work it takes to make a union survive.

Sharon: Mike, I love you more than anyone ever. Thank you for understanding me, for
being patient and kind with me, and for being my partner. I am unbelievably excited to
build the foundation of a larger family and life with you. I promise that I will always put
us first. I promise to be careful with your heart, and accept your love with a sense of
responsibility. I promise to find comfort and strength in you and to let you find the same
in me. Let this ring, warmed by our community, forever remind us of our commitment to
each other.

Mike: Sharon, I love you more than I thought was possible. I promise to share every
aspect of my life with you. I promise to be a fully invested and involved partner in all
aspects of our lives. I promise to care for you as best I can, and let you do the same for
me. I promise to tell and show you how much you mean to me every day. I promise to
do my best to give you everything you deserve. Let this ring, warmed by our community,
forever remind us of our commitment to each other.

They kiss.

By the power vested in my by you guys, you are officially hitched!
See you all in the cocktail lounge!Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6021226190468466858.post-90511200567874409722012-06-19T06:49:00.002-07:002012-07-24T20:20:52.944-07:00The Music! Our ceremony musician was our friend, Joshua Marcus, whose albums are great and can be purchased from his website.

We entered to "The Book of Love" by The Magnetic Fields.

During the ring warming ceremony, Joshua played "Who Knows Where The Times Goes" by Sandy Denny, followed by "I Haven't Seen This Day Before" by The Innocence Mission.

He finished with "In The Aeroplane Over the Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel, one of our favorite songs, ever.

We will be forever grateful to Joshua for his playing! He did a fantastic job.

We also hired a local band to play for a while during the reception. Everyone really seemed to enjoy The West Philadelphia Orchestra! They are an Eastern European style brass band and they are very fun to dance to!

During dinner, we heard a soul and R&B mix made especially for us by our brilliant, music-loving friend Owen Riordan! Mike and Sharon also made the mixes that played before the ceremony and in-between other things. We recommend the MyWeddingDJ app for iPhone, which was helpful.

Craig Wasko was the default DJ for our too-short, but super fun, 80's dance party, with technical help from Nick Lally, and our P.A. was graciously loaned to us by Gina and Jason at our favorite local arts venue, The Rotunda.

Honeymoon Registry:
We are registered at Honeyfund, where you can help us pay for our honeymoon to Vancouver, Canada in August!

Traditional Registry:
If you'd prefer to buy us a traditional gift we are also registered at Macy's through The I Do foundation, which donates a percentage to selected charities each time you purchase a wedding gift off our registry - all at no additional cost to you or us. (We're sorry that it's kind of hard to find our actual registries through this link! When you get to the Macy's page, there's a "search for registries" at the top center of the page- click to search for "Sharon Wasko.")

Another Idea:
As an alternative we would also love if you gave a donation in our honor to one of the following charities:
Sylvia Rivera Law Project
Seems like everyone had a lovely time there! I know we did. For me the highlight was their shower, in which I removed about a gallon of hairspray from my poor hair.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6021226190468466858.post-14545427297065821412011-11-24T18:33:00.001-08:002012-02-25T23:18:09.423-08:00Frequently Asked Questions, Part OneQ: What should I wear?

A: Something spiffy. Keep in mind that the wedding is mostly outdoors, in a garden with trails and a big field by the water, so bring comfy walking shoes that can get dirty.

Really, we don't care what you wear as long as you feel comfortable and happy. If you like getting fancy, by all means, do. But whatever feels festive and fun to you!

Q: Who is your best man/maid of honor?

A: We aren't having a wedding party. But our closest friends and family will have special assignments and are being very wonderful and supportive.

Q: What will the weather be like?

A: No idea. The end of May is hard to predict. Check the internet right before. But know that if it rains, it will be fine. There are tents and some indoor space. They've had weddings during hurricanes before!

Q: What about the food?

A: The food will be SO GOOD. There will be many exciting options for all kinds of diets. It will be mostly vegetarian, with one fish dish. If you have very special dietary needs let us know on your R.S.V.P. form. We are prepared to have options for vegans and gluten-free folks.

Q: And drinks?

A: There will be a lot of wine and beer and a few fancy mixed drinks available. Also non-alcoholic fancy drinks and other options.

Q: What about the children?

A: We love the children! Bring them if you want! But just let us know so we can plan for them to eat. We will plan some fun games and stuff for them to play!

Q: What's the schedule like?

A: Please try to be there at 4. Folks will probably start arriving at 3:45, and Mike and I will show up to join you all for cocktails and appetizers around 4:15. The ceremony is around 4:30, and dinner is at 6!

Q: Do I have to get you a present?

A: No, not at all! But if you want to, we have 2 registries listed on this site, one for our honeymoon, and one for stuff. Alternatively, we'd also love if you gave a donation in our name to one of the charities listed.

Q: Can I bring my dog? You guys love dogs.

A: No, sorry, the historic part of Bartram's is off-limits to dogs.

Q: If I have further questions, should I call one of your mothers and ask them why you aren't doing everything the way I think you should do it?

A: NO. You should email us at sharonandmike52612@gmail.com, and we will gladly discuss anything you'd like.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6021226190468466858.post-26373578443130818532011-11-24T13:01:00.001-08:002012-02-25T22:40:36.369-08:00Frequently Asked Questions, Part TwoQ: Hey, so, are you guys getting married?

A: Yes. No. Wait, define "married."

Q: Are you having a ceremony involving rituals meant to symbolize the uniting of two into one? With rings? And a white dress?

A: Yes.

Q: Are you inviting lots of your friends and most of your family, renting a venue and having it catered, and will there be dancing and photos and merriment of all kinds?

A: YES!

Q: After this event will you consider yourselves a family in your own eyes and the eyes of those you hold dear? Will you be promising to stay together for the rest of your lives? Are you as in love with each other as you could imagine being?

A: Yes, yes, yes!

Q: Are getting legally married?

A: Nope.

Q: Why not?

A: Many reasons. We don't feel ok being part of an institution in which not all of our friends and family could participate- or ourselves, if we had fallen in love with people of the same gender as us. We don't plan on getting legally married as long as same-sex marriage is not legal across the U.S.

We discussed it for a long time and decided that the important part of marriage is not the paperwork that you sign with the federal government.

We don't go to weddings because we're excited about the new couple's tax status. We go to these things to see a couple declare their love and devotion, maybe to welcome them into the family, and then dance and drink and eat and wear fancy clothes. And we aim to do just that.

Q: What about your legal rights?

A: We know that we are passing up a lot of legal rights, but this is the choice we are making and we ask you to respect it. We are talking to a lawyer and are going to sign a bunch of paperwork to get what rights we can and everything will be ok.

Q: Ok. But wait, is this a wedding? Or a commitment ceremony? Or a party?

A: It is whatever you wanna call it. We change it depending on our mood. Just come and have fun, ok?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com
